The UK - and London in particular - has always been the principal springboard into the European market for US private equity houses. The shared language, the strength of London's financial markets, and its depth and breadth of advisory talent and expertise, has made it the obvious venue from which to expand into Europe.
However, the drivers for each individual firm's decision to travel 'across the pond' vary greatly. Some move swiftly on the back of single investment opportunity; others are led by clear strategic needs to build their international reach. But however each firm initially plans to put down its roots in Britain, the reality can be different.
For more than 40 years, Arrowpoint Advisory has advised US private equity firms on mid-market deals on both sides of the Atlantic. Recently, we and international law firm Mayer Brown gathered together 10 such firms - from players with long-established UK footholds to newer entrants into this market - to reflect on their experiences.
